Windows on Another Heaven Art show at Strasburg Town Hall

Flying in the Summer Sky

Contemporary Abstract artist Ren Crawford is the featured artist for the month of April in what will be a year long art show at the Strasburg Town Office. Ren Crawford has been a resident of Strasburg for thirty years. Her work has shown in galleries throughout the United States and in Japan, Australia, England, Mexico and Canada. Her paintings are in many local collections and are shown in local galleries. Ren resides in Strasburg full time, working from a studio-gallery within her home. The Windows on Another Heaven exhibition at Strasburg Town Hall features 13 large color pieces.

The shows which will run monthly are being coordinated by local art agent Marcy McCann as part of the community driven downtown revitalization strategy headed by Hometown Strasburg. “Arts and culture are a large component of the business/resident/town partnership’s effort to attract more businesses and tourists to Strasburg’s Historic Downtown” said McCann whose business LtdPrints.com is also located in the downtown historic district. “We are fortunate to have so many talented people living or working within our community, so it is only fitting that we celebrate these people in a more public way, in more public spaces.” she went on the say.

In the last six months community leaders have come together to develop ways to breath new life into what once was a thriving, late night shopping experience in an exciting town along the Shenandoah Valley’s Historic Valley Pike. Town Manager Jud Rex and staff along with the Town Council have been at the ready to assist in helping recreate this vibrant downtown. Greg Martin the Assistant Town Manager has been meeting with McCann, Natalie Wills the Director of Tourism and Marketing for Shenandoah County, Stephanie Lillard, Business Development Manager at People Incorporated of Virginia and others to discuss the benefits of designating an Arts and Culture District in Strasburg as one of the many components of the overall downtown revitalization efforts.

Dimensional Landscapes by Linda L. Anderson

"Transcendental Gold"

Linda L. Anderson’s work will return in April after the redesign of the new gallery space.

About this series.
In this series, I employed the synergistic combination of direct painting, printmaking and elements of collaged original prints, drawings and smaller paintings on canvas to create works that encourage new perceptions of the natural world.

The landscape and elements of nature are the significant inspiration for the paintings within this new body of work. Each of these compositions is themed around our relationship with elemental Earth, and while contemporary in compositional design, these works honor traditional landscape painting.

Each painting functions as a living experience. Dimensional space, matter and light are felt to shift as if one were participating in a visual melody unfolding through perceived passages of time.

Spatial realism is achieved through the pictorial device of atmospheric perspective. This depiction of space in perspective combines with actual, or sculptural space and form. This aspect is realized as the configurations of canvas push forward into the spaces the works inhabit.

The compositions are designed to be experienced as actual terrains; entrance begins as a physical relationship. The surface qualities of these dimensional landscapes place the body in both an actual and a perceived relationship with the work. There is a sense of having experienced the work in the flow of time. Each painting is composed in a manner that encourages a physical connection between the human body and the material body of the physical form of the artwork. Ground and spatial dimensions are felt to shift as they are altered by the viewer’s movements and proximity to the work. A rich and luminous palette complements the textured surfaces that undergo changes in value and spectrum as light travels over the painting’s low-relief surfaces.

The physical reality—the tangible presence of these works—has the potential to remind the active participant of what it feels like to be in an aesthetic relationship with the physical world; essentially to be a part of the composition as a physical body that is tactilely aware and responsive to the environment.
